The Japanese landscape is rugged, with more than four-fifths of the land surface consisting of mountains. The Japanese people have a deep affection for the beauty of the landscape. The ancient Shinto religion says natural features like mountains, waterfalls, and forests have their own spirits, like souls. The climate of Japan is predominantly temperate but varies greatly from north to south. The northernmost region, Hokkaido, has a humid continental climate with long, cold winters and very warm to cool summers. Precipitation is not heavy, but the islands usually develop deep snowbanks in the winter. In general, Japan’s climate is characterized as monsoonal. The main influences are the country’s latitudinal extent, the surrounding oceans, and its proximity to the neighbouring Asian landmass.
