Zakouma National Park is a national park located between Sarh and Am Timan, in the southern part of the Republic of Chad. Established in 1963, it was Chad's first national park, and covers an area of nearly 3,000 square kilometers. Areas in and near the national park have experienced significant declines in a number of wildlife species in recent decades. For example, elephant herds were significant in numbers as recently as 1970 with an estimated population of 300,000, however, by 2007 this number had dropped to around 10,000
