Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned as Sri Lanka’s prime minister on May 9, 2022, hours after deadly clashes broke out. His supporters, some armed with iron bars, had attacked anti-government protesters in Colombo. At least three people were reportedly killed, including a ruling party legislator, and more than 150 were hospitalised. The country has struggled with months of power cuts and shortages of food, fuel and medicine, sparking weeks of nationwide protests.
