The state is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east; It shares maritime borders with Rhode Island, to the east of Long Island, as well as international borders with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the northwest. It is sometimes called the State of New York to distinguish it from New York City, which is the largest city and contains 44% of the state's population.
