In this series we meet common or bare nosed wombats, living in the woods of South East Australia and Tasmania, and southern hairy nosed wombats, living in South Australia. Wombats are some of the largest burrowing mammals in the world; they dig in areas of uncovered earth, under the roots of trees or the sides of rocks. Unable to regulate their body temperatures in warmer weather, the wombats will stay underground during the heat of the day and only emerge towards nightfall when temperatures are cooler. Only then will they come out to forage, finding their way around using their excellent sense of smell
