The Greek countryside is rich in diversity; mountains, forests, gorges, rivers, lakes, caves, volcanoes, lagoons, you name it! Its landscape, mainly mountainous, is home to a large variety of flora and fauna, making it ideal for travelling amongst the green embrace of nature.Greece is primarily a mountainous country with more than 300 larger or smaller mountains. The most significant mountain range is Pindus, which forms the “backbone” of Mainland Greece. This mountain chain extends down the Peloponnese and Crete. The highest mountain in the country is Mount Olympus, in Macedonia known from Greek mythology as the home of the Gods (Mytikas peak 2,917 m), while about 40 mountain ranges throughout the country exceed 2,000m height. Most of the country was forested at one time. Over the centuries, the forests were cut down for firewood, lumber, and to make room for farms. Today, forests can be found mainly in the Pindus and Rhodope ranges.Greece has ten national parks and there is an effort to protect natural and historic landmarks. Marine parks help protect the habitats of two of Europe's most endangered sea creatures, the loggerhead turtle and monk seal. The long coastline and clear water make Greece an ideal location to spot sea stars, sea anemones, sponges, and seahorses hiding in the seaweed
