⁣The Alps are one of the largest and longest mountain ranges in Europe, covering 8 countries respectively: France, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany and Slovenia. The Alps were formed over 10 million years ago when the African and Eurasian plates collided. As a result of the collision, layers of marine sedimentary rocks were uplifted by faults and folds, resulting in high mountains such as Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn. Mont Blanc stretches along the Franco-Italian border, due to its height it is the highest mountain in the Alps. 128 mountains of the Alps have a height of more than four thousand meters, of which 82 are independent, 46 are peaks, some are more or less frozen. The Alps are divided into several mountain groups and chains, see Category: Alpine mountains.
