Tom Clancy's The Division is a third-person shooter and action role-playing video game , with elements of survival and an open world environment, developed by Ubisoft Massive, in collaboration with Ubisoft Annecy, Ubisoft Reflections and Red Storm Entertainment, for Microsoft Windows platforms , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One . It was announced during Ubisoft 's E3 2013 conference , along with seven minutes of gameplay. The game was released internationally on March 8, 2016. The Division takes place in a dystopian version of New York City , after the start of asmallpox pandemic ; the player, an agent of the Strategic Homeland Division, is tasked with helping rebuild the Division's operations in Manhattan , fighting criminals and investigating the cause of the pandemic. The Division is structured with role-playing elements , as well as cooperative and player vs player multiplayer modes
