Taming Predators Lions & Wild Dogs Guardians of the Wild

The Luangwa Valley in Zambia is a vibrant, wildlife-rich sanctuary, home to sixty mammal species and over four hundred bird species, and one of the last strongholds for Africa’s endangered large carnivores. However, the valley is under threat from expanding human populations. Two young scientists, Henry Mwape and Johnathan Merkle, are dedicated to studying the valley's carnivores—such as lions and wild dogs—to understand the health of the ecosystem. Based at the Zambian Carnivore Programme’s camp near South Luangwa National Park, they conduct vital research over a vast wilderness area, working to protect this fragile habitat. Their efforts highlight the importance of balancing human presence with conservation, proving that people can play a crucial role in safeguarding the future of this unique African landscape
