The city of Kiel is the centre of the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany and the oldest port in the country. It is here that the canal separating the North Sea and the Baltic Sea begins; it was at Kiel shipyards that the German navy was born and famous cruisers and battleships, including the five-tubed ‘Askold’, were launched from the slipway.
